Photos from Mayer Hawthorne and the County at The Continental Room June 18, 2009

Stonesthrow artist Mayer Hawthorne was performing at The Continental Room on June 16, 2009 so I decided to head out to the opposite side of town and check out his live show. The sometime dj, sometime singer, was performing with his band, The County, a selection of songs from the forthcoming album.

This was my first time at the Continental Room. Definitely a good spot for drinks, but an interesting spot for a show, considering the size of the venue and size of the crowd. The lighting definitely added to the mood, as did the many female fans attracted by this rising artist.

Photos from Freefall Rescue & Sam Gibney at the Cat Club in West Hollywood on April 14, 2009

Freefall Rescue, along with Sam Gibney, was performing at the Cat Club in West Hollywood on April 14, 2009.

The Cat Club had an interesting atmosphere with the really dim lights and a disco light posiitioned above the stage. There was also an open window behind the band with a neon sign and ambient lights from Sunset Blvd. What made this tricky to photograph was being able to compress the higlights while pulling the enough shadow details to match the feeling from within the Cat Club. Overall, the photographs from the show have an interesting look that might not appeal to everones' taste.

Kodak Announces Ektar 100 in 120 Format

Kodak has just announced that their Ektar 100 film will be available worldwide in 120 format starting in April 2009.

For those of you not familiar with the Ektar 100 in 35mm, it is the successor to the now discontinued Kodak 100 UC (Ultra Color). The new Ektar 100 is known for it's high saturation and ultra-vivid color in an ISO 100 film. Kodak claims the Ektar 100 features "the finest, smoothest grain of any color negative film available today," making it ideal for scanning or sharper print enlargements.

The Kodak Ektar is definitely aimed at the professional or advanced amateur who shoots nature, fashion, travel or still products. But this film will obviously attract the LOMO/HOLGA/DIANA shooters looking to add some extra punch to their photos without having to cross process their film.

All that being said, I'm headed down to Freestyle Photo to pick up some Kodak Ektar in 120 format.  Currently they have them available only in 5 packs. So if you're in the Los Angeles/Hollywood area you might want to grab them before they run out.  As a note, I checked a few online sites and most of them are out of stock, except for Calumet. 

I'll keep you posted on how the shots come out. With some luck, by this weekend; realistically, not until next week.
